The act of being humble. Modest and respectful. Keeping oneself within bounds. Humility is seen as a virtue in many religions. It comes from the Latin word humilitas which means grounded, from the earth.

In the Christian faith it is viewed as the cardinal virtue of temperance, being able to restrain undue desires. A willingness to submit to God and to others for God’s sake and to realize ones limitations. Jesus being the ultimate example of humility. ''God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble''. Proverbs 3:34.

Through humility comes wisdom. It shows strength and not weakness. The opposite of humility is pride.

In the Muslim faith, the actual term Islam can be interpreted to mean ‘surrender to God’. Arabic words meaning humility are khoshou and tawadu. ''Successful indeed are the believers, those who humble themselves in their prayers." (Al-Muminoon 23:1-2).

We can all use more self-understanding and confidence. The act of being humble brings much more than one may first realize. It’s about being open, learning about ones self, putting others first - and offers great lessons in perspective.
